Coleus forskohlii is a member of the mint (Labiatae) family. It grows primarily on mountains in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The primary constituent of clinical interest contained in C. forskohlii is the diterpine forskolin.
Forskolin is a potent stimulator of adenylate cyclase, the enzyme which increases cyclic AMP (cAMP) in cells. Cyclic AMP is a most significant cell-regulating compound or cell “messenger.” The physiological and biochemical effects of an elevated camp are numerous, as it acts on various cells, hormones and tissues.
Coleus forskohlii has a long history of use in Ayurvedic Siddha and Unani systems of medicine. Studies of the pharmacological activity of forskolin substantiate the traditional and current uses of C. forskohlii: Promotes healthy cardiovascular function, promotes healthy lung function, maintains healthy skin, supports the immune system and is antispasmodic.*
